The Chevrolet powered Chaparral 2E driven by Jim Hall at the 1966 Los Angeles Times Grand Prix at Riverside Raceway – the fifth race of the inaugural Canadian-American Challenge Cup series (Can-Am). Hall finished in 2nd place behind season champion John Surtees driving the Lola T70 MkII. At the previous race at Laguna Seca Raceway, Phil Hill won in the sister 2E, and Jim Hall finished second. Although the Chaparral 2E had reliability problems during the 1966 season, when it was running well, it was the fastest car at every event. It showed the racing world that aerodynamics would now be a leading factor in racing car design.
