The Ford GT40 Mk I driven by Jacky Ickx and Dick Thompson at the 1967 24 hours of Daytona – they finished in 6th place overall behind a trio of Ferrari 330s. This was the personal car of Gulf vice president, Grady Davis, who decided to enter his own car as an independent entry at both Daytona and Sebring. It was the first GT40 painted in Gulf Oil corporate colors. Later in the year Ford decided to withdraw from sports car racing, Gulf Oil Corporation took over the sponsorship of the GT40 race team now managed by John Wyer Automotive Engineering.
