The Ford P68 (F3L) driven by Frank Gardner and Richard Attwood at the 1968 Nürburgring 1000km. The Alan Mann Racing (AMR) entered P68 (Ford Europe’s entry into the FIA’s new 3 litre prototype class), failed to finish the race due to brake issues. The second team car, driven at the time by Chris Irwin, suffered a bad crash in practice which ended his driving career, and destroyed the car. Although the P68 looked the part, and seemed to have potential in the new 3 litre class, the promise was never to be fulfilled. During 1968, due to mechanical or electrical issues, the P68 failed to finish any of the few races it was entered. In 1969, AMR returned with the P69, an open spyder version of the P68 with large high-mounted wings that were quickly banned by the European sanctioning body. Without the wings, the car would require a complete redesign to be competitive, lacking the necessary funds, the P68/P69 project was ended.
