The Porsche 356B Carrera GTL Abarth Coupé driven by Hans Herrmann and Herbert Linge at the 46th Targa Florio in May 1962. In the early 1960’s Porsche collaborated with Carlo Abarth to create a super-lightweight limited production racer – the Porsche 356B Carrera GTL Abarth Coupé. The prototype, sculpted from aluminum, weighed in at just over the required FIA minimum weight limit for its class. But the engineers at Porsche were not happy with all aspects of the initial car. The narrowed fenders restricted steering, the roof was so low that some engineers could not get into the car, and the engine overheated regularly. Corrections were made, and the car was instantly successful at the racetrack. For the 1962 Targa Florio, Porsche had Giovanni Volpi’s Scuderia SSS Republica di Venezia enter two 356Bs, and a two 718 GTRs. The Herrmann and Linge 356B won the under 2-litre GT class, and finished 6th overall. A 718 GTR driven by Joakim Bonnier and Nino Vaccarella won the 2-litre Prototype class, and finished 3rd overall.
