The Toyota 87C-L driven by Alan Jones, Geoff Lees, and Eje Elgh at the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans. 1987 was the early days of Toyota’s Le Mans effort, and the number 36 car displayed their lack of experience – it ran out of fuel on the 19th lap. Toyota’s factory supported team had started in earnest at the 1985 Le Mans race with a Group C car designed by Dome and built by TOM’s (Toyota had supplied engines for a couple teams in the 1970’s, and early 1980’s). The factory team continued to enter cars with little success until their overall win in 2018. Toyota then followed up with victories in 2019 and 2020, a just reward for 30 years of struggle.
