Iso Grifo A3C
Series III Illustration: ISO GRIFO A3C
The Chevrolet powered Iso Grifo A3C driven by Jean de Mortemart and Régis Fraissinet at the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Iso Grifo Bizzarrini Prototipi entered A3C finished 9th overall, and won the over 5 litre prototype class. In 1962 Italian industrialist Renzo Rivolta wanted to expand his empire into high end motor cars, he recruited renowned engineer Giotto Bizzarrini, and stylist Carrozzeria Bertone to construct the car. The resulting Iso Grifo A3C first raced during the 1964 World Sportscar Championship. It was planned that the A3C would be run in the GT class, but by the time the ‘64 season started, the A3C had not come close to meeting the 100-car production run required. By the 1965 Le Mans race, the sole A3C entered wore a new fiberglass body, and although the A3C had shown promise over its 2 year competition career, trouble was growing behind the scenes. The A3C had been developed and raced entirely at Renzo Rivolta’s expense, but Bizzarrini had constructed nearly every A3C, and most of the car’s races had been entered by Bizzarrini Prototipo. And, unknown by Rivolta, Bizzarrini had registered the Grifo trademark for himself. At the end of the 1965 season, an exasperated Renzo Rivolta ended his association with Bizzarrini. The two came to an agreement that Bizzarrini would hand over the Grifo trademark in exchange for the sole production rights to the A3C. Bizzarrini had enough components to construct an additional 50 cars – under his own name.
