MATRA-SIMCA MS650
The Matra-Simca MS650 driven by Henri Pescarolo and Johnny Servoz-Gavin at the 1970 12 Hours of Sebring. The number 34 Matra finished in 5th place overall. The 1970 race is considered by many to be the most exciting 12 Hours of Sebring ever. With only a few laps remaining, the Steve McQueen/Peter Revson Porsche 908/2 took the overall lead after Mario Andretti brought the leading Ferrari 512 S into the pits for fuel. But Andretti stormed out of the pits and chased down Revson over the final few laps, and at the end Andretti crossed the finish line first, with Revson second. The race was expected to be dominated by the 4.5 litre Porsche 917s, and 5 litre Ferrari 512s, but 7 of the top 10 finishers were 3 litre cars (Porsche 908/2, Alfa Romeo T33/3, and the Matra-Simca MS650). While the Matra MS650 was not a great success (it did win the 1970, and 1971 Tour de France), Matra continuously developed the car, and as the 917s and 512s would be banned for the 1972 season, Matra was well positioned with the evolved MS670. Matra would win the World Sportscar Championship in 1973 and 1974, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 3 years in a row (1972-1974).
