PORSCHE 906
The race winning Porsche 906 driven by Tetsu Ikuzawa at the 1967 Japan Grand Prix. The 24-year-old Ikuzawa, qualified first in his white and yellow number 8 Porsche 906. His lap time of 1 minute, 59.43 seconds made Ikuzawa the first driver to break the sub-2 minute barrier at Fuji International Speedway. The record lap in qualifying was a great achievement, but Ikuzawa, a privateer without factory support, was determined to win the Japan Grand Prix, primarily to secure the prize money that would allow him to continue racing in Britain. Tetsu Ikuzawa was the first Japanese automobile racer to compete overseas on a full-time basis, in the British Formula Three Championship. His racing future was effectively riding on this one race. Ikuzawa would win the race, and cement his place as one of the most beloved drivers in Japanese motor racing. He was unanimously hailed as a hero, an independent driver who defeated the manufacturer establishment. In a famous post-race scene, Ikuzawa was presented a bottle of Coca-Cola to drink on the podium, but Ikuzawa declined the drink, he would only drink Pepsi to honour his sponsor.
