Series III Illustration: PORSCHE 908 LH
The race winning Porsche 908 LH driven by Jo Siffert and Brian Redman at the 1969 Spa 1000 km. The Porsche factory team brought 6 cars to Spa, 4 were the 908 LH, and 2 were the brand-new 917 (it was the debut race of the 917). Siffert and Redman were expected to drive a 917, and during practice Jo Siffert had the fastest lap time driving a 917. But he decided to start the race in the older 908 because he was not confident in the handling of the 917. Only one 917 was able to start the race (it qualified 8th), but the already troubled engine failed after one lap. The 917 was expected to bring Porsche the Championship in 1969, but issues with the handling and reliability meant that the older 908 was depended on to win races. The 908 (both long and short tail versions) was well sorted out by 1969 and easily brought Porsche the Manufacturers Championship.
